What is The Martial Camp?

An immersive internal martial arts training camp arranged by The Martial Man. At each camp, practitioners train hands-on with several respected teachers of different systems, while living and eating together at a secluded retreat. Each camp has its own line-up; past camps have covered Tai Chi, Internal Wing Chun, Qi Gong, White Crane, Southern Shaolin and more.

When is the next camp?

We don’t have a camp scheduled right now. When we announce the next one, the interest list hears first, with dates, teachers and early registration. Join the list.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Past camps have welcomed everyone from complete beginners to long-time teachers. The training is hands-on and taught in a way that works at any level, and the atmosphere is supportive and ego-free. If you have a health condition or injury, check with your doctor before booking.

How long is a camp, and how much training is there?

Our full camps have run for about two weeks. At those, each teacher usually has one or two dedicated days, adding up to around ten or eleven training days and 50+ hours of instruction, with the other days for group excursions, meditation and rest. We’ve also run shorter, focused workshops, such as a five-day Beggar Stick intensive. The length of each future camp will be confirmed when it’s announced.

What does a typical training day look like?

Breakfast from 7:00, morning training 9:00–12:00, lunch, afternoon training 13:30–16:00, free time to rest, swim or practise, and dinner together from 18:00. See The Experience for more.

Where is the camp held?

At a secluded retreat chosen for each camp. Future camps may take place in different places, so we announce the location to the interest list with each camp, along with the dates and teachers. Join the interest list to hear first.

What’s included in the price?

For a full camp: accommodation, all meals at the venue, all training sessions and all group excursions. Flights, travel documents, travel insurance and personal extras are not included. Exact inclusions are confirmed for each camp when booking opens.

What are the room options?

Usually a shared twin room (paired with another participant of the same gender), a private room, a twin room booked together with a friend, and a private room for you and a non-training partner. Private rooms are limited and allocated first come, first served. Room details are confirmed for each camp when booking opens.

Can I bring a partner who doesn’t train?

Yes. Your partner can relax and enjoy the venue while you train, and join every group excursion with you. Choose the participant-plus-partner option when booking.

Can you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. Meals are made with fresh local produce, and vegetarian and vegan options are available. Tell us about any allergies or requirements when you book.

Do I have to join the excursions?

No. All outings are optional. Past camps have included visits to sacred and historic sites, time in nature, local markets and a guided meditation session.

How do payments work?

When booking opens you can pay securely online by card through Stripe, either in full or, for most options, in instalments. You’ll receive a confirmation by email straight away.

What is the cancellation policy?

Bookings are non-refundable, because we commit to the venue, teachers and suppliers well in advance. If you can’t attend, you can transfer your place to someone else up to 30 days before the camp starts by letting us know in writing. We strongly recommend travel insurance. Full details are in our terms.

Are there amenities like laundry, towels and Wi-Fi?

At past venues rooms have been cleaned daily, towels provided, laundry available and Wi-Fi free. We confirm the amenities for each venue when the camp is announced.

Do I need a visa or any travel documents?

That depends on your nationality and where the camp is held. Once the location is announced, please check the entry requirements for your passport well before you travel. Arranging the right documents is your responsibility.

Will I be photographed or filmed?

Usually, yes. We photograph and film sessions so we can share the camp afterwards, and by taking part you agree that this material may be used (see our terms). If you have a particular concern, talk to us before the camp.
